    Celebrate big for tomorrow's #CabernetDay

Winetology Wednesday: Preachings from Wine Evangelist Jonny Cigar

Today’s Sermon: “Celebrating and Understanding the Cabernet Varietals On #CabernetDay”

Faithful Libation Congregation, tomorrow also brings a global event to an iPhone or Android near you and if it’s not on your radar, the Twitter Gods shall be unnerved. Behold: Thursday, August 30th is #CabernetDay.

To understand the Cabernet varietals (i.e. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc), a man who is diamonds to the wine industry and who held the first official Social Media position at a winery – Rick Bakas – devised these hashtag days as a means to help raise awareness about particular varietals and regions. There’s #ChardonnayDay and #LanguedocDay and #JonnyCigarDay (ahem) among others.

So tomorrow pull out the cork of a bottle of wine made either of Cabernet Sauvignon or Cabernet Franc and Tweet, Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram the hell out of that wine.

Then, consider this: what has Cabernet has done for you?

Think about the myriad bottles of wine you’ve consumed without giving pause for even one moment to recognize the efforts that went into producing your Cabernet fueled rampage(s). Know this: a Farmer cultivated those grapes and then a Vintner bought them and crushed them, fermented, aged them and agonized over the right label design, bottled and sold that wine and it ended up in your glass. It made you tipsy. It made for easy conversation. Before you knew it: love was discovered. Love.

Cabernet is your friend. It comes in many styles. You cannot say you do not like Cabernet because at your friend’s house you drank this Spanish Cabernet that was tannic. Don’t ever say anything like that ever again, okay? Don’t even think like that. We’re adults here in the house of Winetology and we think and drink like adults. Adults at Disney Land without children. Okay? Think about that.

This week’s Winetology Recommendation is: 2008 Lenz Winery Cabernet Sauvignon retailing at about $23 per bottle and should be a great discovery of a North Fork Long Island wine. Look for it at your local wine shop through wine-searcher.com.

Last bi-weekly recommendation was the 2008 Swanson Vineyards Merlot from Oakville, Napa Valley. Jonny’s take: Powerful, smooth, rich, infinity pool, filling the empty space, poetry of Merwin, more art than Pollack, more grub than Grubstreet.

Swirl often, savor, and above all think after you drink.
