There’s a pop-up seafood shack on a city island…and you don’t need to hike all the way to City Island.
Chef David Santos has become the unofficial tourism president of Roosevelt Island. First, his Um Segredo Supper Club, and now the “Santos Seafood Shack” on the new Pier NYC, sharing space on the water’s edge with John Brown Smokehouse and a small bar. It’s open everyday until October, and just a two-minute walk from the tram (because you have to get the tram, and it’s ok to tweet photos of the views).
The menu has all the seafood shack favorites like oysters, crab cakes and shrimp cocktails, with a rock shrimp roll topped with charred scallions and aioli that could be a contender for Best New Shrimp Roll, and a refreshing wild striped bass ceviche with tortilla chips that goes down really well with beer or cocktails (or both if you spend enough time there soaking up those views, which get even better at sunset).
Our tip? Forget the barbecue, stick to the seafood. And there’s a ridiculous warm chocolate toffee fudge brownie by Allycakes to tide you over until you get back to the mainland.
Pier NYC on Roosevelt Island, open everyday from 12pm-11pm.
