Gettin’ Cheesy With It: The Big Cheesy Recap

Once a year, on a glorious spring weekend, masses of grilled cheese lovers journey to Openhouse NYC in SoHo for the ultimate grilled cheese competition. The Big Cheesy brings together the best grilled cheese purveyors of NYC and allows for the people to decided which sandwich reigns supreme.

There are only two rules in the competition:

1. Competitors can only present one sandwich (two if they’re doing a vegetarian and meat options).

2. The grilled cheeses must be delicious.

All attendees were allowed to sample as many grilled cheeses as they could handle while washing down the melty goodness with a tall boy of their Sixpoint Brewery beer of choice. Competition was deliciously fierce this year with offerings ranging from smoky to sweet.

Radish's Bedford Avenue storefront will be expanding with the addition of a 1,500 sq. ft. venue in Williamsburg where they will host a new supper club and other dining events

Brooklyn's Smorgasburg will be introducing Smorgasbar this weekend, allowing those over 21 to drink beer, wine, and cocktails in a special roped off area

Quick Bites

Remember Ben Starr from last year’s MasterChef? The eccentric chef with a penchant for colourful berets has teamed up with fellow contestant, Jennie Kelley, for a series of supper clubs called Frank Underground in their hometown of Dallas. The pair serve a multi-course dinner for donations only, and dinners have been selling out in under five minutes. So it sounds like there can be life after MasterChef.

Williamsburg’s Radish, a delicious take-out store and catering business, just announced it will be launching a new supper club once it moves into its newly-purchased event space where it plans to host dinners for up to 75 people.  And it’s going to be quite the venue, complete with a marble white bar, Mexican tiles, and bamboo floors. Sounds like it will be an instant hit on the supper club scene.

Finally.  What we have all been waiting for – booze at Smorgasburg.  Starting this Saturday, Brooklyn food market, Smorgasburg, will be introducing Smorgasbar.   Now you can enjoy your Asia Dog hot dog or Milk Truck grilled cheese with a Kelso beer in hand.  Other boozy vendors will include SixpointBrooklyn BreweryBrooklyn Winery, and Kings County Distillery among others.
