Once a year, on a glorious spring weekend, masses of grilled cheese lovers journey to Openhouse NYC in SoHo for the ultimate grilled cheese competition. The Big Cheesy brings together the best grilled cheese purveyors of NYC and allows for the people to decided which sandwich reigns supreme.
There are only two rules in the competition:
1. Competitors can only present one sandwich (two if they’re doing a vegetarian and meat options).
2. The grilled cheeses must be delicious.
All attendees were allowed to sample as many grilled cheeses as they could handle while washing down the melty goodness with a tall boy of their Sixpoint Brewery beer of choice. Competition was deliciously fierce this year with offerings ranging from smoky to sweet.
This weekend The Big Cheesy grilled cheese competition is back! The two-day festival will feature New York’s finest sandwich chefs including Melt Shop (last year’s champion), 2011 winner Milk Truck, Lucy’s Why, Murray’s Cheese Bar, Say Cheese, Sons of Essex, and Tom Colicchio’s ‘witchcraft. There will also be plenty of Sixpoint tallboys to wash down the grilled cheese goodness. Tickets to this event are $25 but Underground Eats has two complimentary tickets for one lucky member!
While we do wish to remain an exclusive site for discerning New York food-lovers, we also don’t want to be selfish and hoard all the events ourselves. Therefore we would like for you to share the “underground” love with your fellow food enthusiast friends.
For every new invitation you send to a friend to join Underground Eats this week, your name will be entered to win two tickets for the Big Cheesy. To invite new members, all you need to do is log into www.undergroundeats.com and click the “Invite a Friend” link. The winner of the tickets will be notified by mid-day on Friday.
Remember Ben Starr from last year’s MasterChef? The eccentric chef with a penchant for colourful berets has teamed up with fellow contestant, Jennie Kelley, for a series of supper clubs called Frank Underground in their hometown of Dallas. The pair serve a multi-course dinner for donations only, and dinners have been selling out in under five minutes. So it sounds like there can be life after MasterChef.
Williamsburg’s Radish, a delicious take-out store and catering business, just announced it will be launching a new supper club once it moves into its newly-purchased event space where it plans to host dinners for up to 75 people. And it’s going to be quite the venue, complete with a marble white bar, Mexican tiles, and bamboo floors. Sounds like it will be an instant hit on the supper club scene.
Finally. What we have all been waiting for – booze at Smorgasburg. Starting this Saturday, Brooklyn food market, Smorgasburg, will be introducing Smorgasbar. Now you can enjoy your Asia Dog hot dog or Milk Truck grilled cheese with a Kelso beer in hand. Other boozy vendors will include Sixpoint, Brooklyn Brewery, Brooklyn Winery, and Kings County Distillery among others.
