Foodie Happenings This Weekend

It’s Friday afternoon.  The clock is ticking.  It’s almost time.  The weekend is nearly here.  Got plans?  Here are a few events that should keep you happy and full until Monday.

If you are heading East to Long Island this weekend be sure to go all the way to the end to Montauk.  On Saturday the New York culinary scene will be taking this touristy surfing town by storm as chefs battle it out in this years Superburger competition.  Watch chefs like Seamus Mullen of TertuliaAlex Stupak from Empellon, and Harold Moore of Commerce flip some serious burgers as they compete to win a slot in the NYC Burger Bash during 2012′s Food & Wine Festival.

If you’re trying to see some live music this weekend, then we definitely recommend hitting up Brooklyn’s Afropunk Festival on Saturday.  Outdoor concerts and food trucks are what summer saturdays are all about.  Big music acts like TV On The Radio, Erykah Badu, Janelle Monae, and Das Racist will be performing.  In between acts grab a burrito at our favorite food truck, Korilla BBQ, some dumplings at Rickshaw Dumplings, or cool off by the Van Leeuwen Ice Cream truck.

Sadly, there are limited weekends left for New Yorkers to take advantage of Dekalb Market.  The outdoor market will be closing on September 30th.  But until then, the vendors at the downtown Brooklyn market will continue to host awesome events.  This weekend at 3pm Maharlika, the East Village modern Filipino restaurant, will be hosting a Balut Eating Contest and Authentic Filipino Lechon Roast.  For those of you who are not familiar with balut, it is a duck fetus that is boiled and eaten out of the shell.  Now, imagine eating as many of these as possible.  Anyone who enters this competition should automatically win a prize just for eating one balut.

Do you ever brag about your awesome cupcake-making skills?  If you think you have something to prove, then head over to Manhattan Inn on Sunday when they host an open cupcake competition.  The competition starts at 4pm, the judging is at 5pm.  This “Sunday funday” event will feature a live DJ and of course Manhattan Inn’s delicious cocktail selection.  The winner will receive not only all the glory of being the crowned cupcake king or queen, but also a gift certificate for dinner/drink for two people.
