Quick Bites

This past Wednesday the online curated cocktail guide, Dipsology, hosted their “Let’s Get Dipsy” holiday party at 196 Mercer.  The crowd (consisting of many names and faces from the NYC cocktail scene) drank up delicious holiday-inspired concoctions like The Shanty‘s “Last Waltz” (Perry’s Tot Gin, Carpano Antica, Brancamenta, dry curaçao, cinnamon stick, served warm) and Evelyn’s “Hot Sorrel Rum Punch” (rum, vanilla ginger syrup, cinnamon, clove, star anise, lime and Jamaican hibiscus) and specialty egg nog.  Between the copious cocktails, yummy sweets, and bumping tunes, the SoHo loft was filled with holiday cheer.

This weekend, if you find yourself craving something sweet, head to DUMBO and get yourself some pastries from Almondine Bakery‘s pop-up fundraiser at their storefront location.  The popular bakery has not been able to reopen due to extreme flooding from Hurricane Sandy.  On Saturday and Sunday the NYC pastry community will donate their goods to be sold at Almondine and help raise funds for the rebuilding effort.  Pick up your favorite treats from places like Bouchon Bakery, Épicerie Boulud, Le Bernardin, and help support DUMBO’s beloved bakery.

Hot dog eating champion, Takeru Kobayashi, will be chowing down on dogs in the name of art this weekend.  The world champion will be in a performance art piece taking place on Sunday at Chelsea’s Postmasters Gallery as part of The Art Fag City Wienerfest.  The fundraiser event will help support the New York art blog and the DUMBO arts non-profit Smack Mellon which was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy.  Learn more about Sunday’s “wienerfest” here.

An article posted today on online news blog Brooklyn Ink discusses the prominent rise of food culture and foodie start-ups in Brooklyn.  The story, titled “Is Brooklyn Becoming the Silicon Valley of Food?“, talks about how the borough has become a hotbed of start-up artisan brands and  like-minded foodie entrepreneurs.  Underground Eats is proud to be a part of such a vibrant community.

If you are fearful of the Mayan’s prediction (that the end of the world will come on December 21st), you may want to get in at least one last good meal.  On December 18th, Chef Charles of One World One Kitchen catering is hosting his last supper club dinner of the year at Devi Restaurant.  Known for his creative dishes that draw inspiration from his multi-cultural upbringing, Chef Charles will prepare a four-course dinner bursting with international flavor.  Learn more about his “Last Supper Club” here.

Almondine Bakery in DUMBO will be hosting a special pastry pop-up shop at their storefront this weekend to help raise money for the rebuilding of the bakery.  Almondine experienced severe flooding and damage during Hurricane Sandy and has not reopened since the storm.  On Saturday and Sunday the best from NYC’s leading pastry chefs will arrive in DUMBO for the two-day pop-up.  Enjoy tasty treats without any feeling of guilt since it’s all in the name of a good cause.  If you can’t make it this weekend, you can still donate towards the rebuilding effort here.

Chef Michael Toscano at Perla is getting in touch with his Mexican roots this weekend for a special three-day Tex-Mex brunch menu starting Friday.  ”Mike’s Menudo Brunch” will feature dishes inspired by the Toscano family’s recipe book as Perla ditches the Italian menu for some huevos rancheros, tacos, and guacamole.  Reservations can be made by emailing reservations[at]perlanyc.com.

In anticipation of the December 21st movie release of On the Road (the film adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s novel), newly-opened Louro in the West Village will host a culinary tribute to the author and his story.  The special menu will act as a continuation of the Um Segredo Author Series started by Louro’s Chef David Santos.  Chef Santos’s former supper club featured special dinners inspired by the life and literature of authors like Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Edgar Allen Poe.  On Saturday, guests will enjoy a five-course menu based around Kerouac’s famous road-trip and the stops he made along the way.  Learn more and purchase tickets here.

NYC’s Best Pastries Pop-up in DUMBO to Help Rebuild Almondine Bakery

Almondine Bakery, a neighborhood favorite in DUMBO, is known for its award-winning macaroons, baguettes, treats, and sandwiches.  Sadly, the bakery was hit hard when Hurricane Sandy swept through New York and has not been able to reopen due to major flooding and damage.  Like many businesses affected by Sandy, Almondine isn’t receiving the insurance money it needs to clean up shop and get production back going.  All of the baking equipment was ruined.

Luckily, the DUMBO community is more than ready to offer a helping hand in rebuilding the neighborhood staple. DUMBO residents have taken initiative by setting up a social media campaign for the bakery with a gofundme.com website to help raise money.  This grassroots operation has already raised over $17,000 but in order to rebuild and reopen, more funds are needed.

Here is where you come in.  Mark your calendars for December 15th and 16th when the best New York pastry chefs help the rebuilding effort by offering their sweets to be sold at a weekend pop-up bakery at the Almondine location.  All the money raised during the pop-up will go directly to the bakery.  So if you have a sweet tooth for pastry and goodwill, head to DUMBO for treats by Le BernardinÉpicerie Boulud, Francois Payard, and more.

For the Stir-Crazy Foodie: Something to Look Forward to

Unfortunately, much of Greater New York has a long road ahead before a full recovery is reached.  As devastation remains in areas including the Far Rockaways and Brighten Beach and Lower Manhattan continues to struggle without power, many New Yorkers are looking for ways to help, donate, and keep their sanity.  For those fortunate to have survived the storm unscathed and are preparing to return to a life of normalcy, here are a few food-centric events to look forward to:

For anyone who is ready to venture out of their apartment and hit the town for a memorable meal, TONIGHT is the night to do it.  Chef David Chang announced that Momofuku will be teaming up with Café Boulud for a six-course dinner with proceeds benefitting the Red Cross.  Cocktails and canapés begin at 6:30pm with a seated dinner and beverage pairings starting at 7:30pm.  The dinner will take place at Cafe Boulud on 20 East 76th Street.  More information and tickets to this benefit can be found here.

On Sunday treat yourself to brunch by making a reservation for “Wu Pops-Up,” a new pop-up supper club offering a series of brunches at Pinkerton Wine Bar in Williamsburg.  Chef Jonathan Wu (Per Se alum) creates inventive menus fusing Chinese flavors and traditional cuisine with contemporary trends and seasonal ingredients.  This is not your typically “sunny-side up with a side of bacon and toast” experience.  We encourage you to check it out.

Bourbon-lovers should mark their calendars for November 14th.  Now.  On Wednesday the 14th, warm your bones (and bellies) at The Bedford during a four-course dinner dedicated to delicious bourbon. Chef Jason Giordano, known for his inventive gastropub fare, has created a special menu incorporating a different small batch bourbon in each course. During this unique dinner pairing, the spirit not only serves as a beverage but also as an ingredient.  Learn more and purchase tickets here.

As more food events are confirmed for the next couple weeks we will be sure to keep you updated and fight the boredom together.
