Chef Craig Thornton of L.A. is bringing his Wolvesmouth supper club to NYC on June 14th

Quick Bites

Popular L.A.-based supper club, Wolvesmouth is heading eastbound to NYC for one night only on June 14th to host two dinners at a Manhattan loft. Chef Craig Thornton’s Wolvesmouth has generated a cult following over the years and has recently been featured in an extensive article in The New Yorker about the “rise of the secret supper club.” No longer a “secret,” Wolvesmouth has gained continued attention from press, food blogs, celebrities, and “foodies.” Stay tuned for more details about his trip to NYC.

While one chef heads east, another heads west. Chef Danny Bowien of Mission Chinese Food announced he will be traveling to his native Oklahoma to do a pop-up dinner with a number of local chefs to help raise money for victims of the recent tornado destruction. The pop-up is entitled OK Chefs and 100% of proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross. The pop-up will take place this coming Sunday and will offer a three-course meal for a minimum donation of $35. Follow hashtag #OKChefsRelief for more info.

Peruvian supper club de Porres has kicked off the summer season and will be offering its next dinner on May 27th. The brooklyn-based supper club is headed up by Danielle Bell and Pablo Osorio. Pablo, who hails from Peru, is the “executive chef” in the kitchen and creates unique tasting menus inspired by food from his native country. Meanwhile Danielle, an American Southerner does her part by curating special beverage pairings for each dinner and cooking up delicious desserts typical of the Deep South. For the dinner on the 27th, they will be celebrating “Meatless Monday” with an all-vegetaian tasting menu of dishes like asparagus gribiche, artichoke a la barigoule, and nettle ravioli.

More than a year after the epic fried chicken twitter battle between The Roots’ Questlove and Momofuku’s David Chang that culminated on Jimmy Fallon with cook-off (David Chang unsurprisingly took the win), Questlove is back in the food game with the May 18th opening of his new food stand in Chelsea Market called Hybird. Hybird will not only offer Questlove’s famous drumsticks, but will also have menu items like “Questfucious Cupcakes” and dumplings.

The Great GoogaMooga weekend-long food festival is kicking off this Friday night

3 Pop-Up Restaurants to Look for at GoogaMooga This Weekend

Just in case you didn’t feel like there was quite enough going on during this weekend’s Great GoogaMooga in Prospect Park, the food-centric festival announced late last week that they will be hosting three exclusive pop-up restaurants on both Saturday and Sunday on top of the 85 food vendors that will be on-site. From what it sounds like, this year is bound to be even more overwhelming than last year but without the downfalls (many VIP ticket holders didn’t get a chance to have a single bite of food).

For those who get flustered whenever you have the opportunity to pick a restaurant to go to due to an overabundance of options, we suggest you plan ahead before walking into the fair grounds to prevent your foodie brain from totally exploding. While there will be plenty of restaurants and purveyors offering up food at various stations, we definitely recommend putting these three unique pop-ups on your radar:

ROBERTA’S URBAN REN FAIRE

Our favorite Bushwick pizzeria is coining their medieval-inspired pop-up concept as the “ultimate medieval meat-on-a-stick-eating dance party.” So basically they are taking the DJ and dance elements of their weekend Tiki Disco parties and mixing in some Elizabethan maidens, knights and royal banquets, with a little Game of Thrones on the side. Tickets are $20 and reservations times are 12:00pm, 2:00pm, 4:00pm, and 6:00pm. If the typical wait for a table at Roberta’s and the lines to get into their Tiki Disco party are of any indication- we suggest reserving your spot ahead of time.

LITTLE WISCO SEAFOOD BOIL & BBQ

For all the Gabe Stuleman-restaurant fans out there, this is your dream come true. A collaborative project by Fedora, Joseph Leonard, and Jeffrey’s Grocery, this pop-up concept includes a Down East seafood boil combined with classic summer activities like bocce and cornhole. Toss bocce balls with friends while downing cold brews and enjoying an old-school seafood boil and BBQ by three of your favorite restaurants.  Tickets are $20 and reservations times are 12:30pm, 2:30pm, 4:30pm, and 6:30pm.

THE SPOTTED PIG HAUS

The Spotted Pig gastropub fare + a classic German biergarten  = perfect summer afternoon. The Spotted Pig Haus with Chef April Bloomfield will pop up at GoogaMooga offering some of her favorite meaty dishes along with a wide selection of German beers and wine. Tickets are $15 and reservation times are 12:15pm, 2:15pm, 4:15pm, and 6:15pm.

On Our Culinary Radar: Chef Jonah Miller

On March 26th NYC’s culinary salon, City Grit, hosted the “Next Big Thing” dinner featuring rising star Chef Jonah Miller. The dinner sold out and the event received attention from culinary insiders and the press. As this young chef from New York gears up for the opening of his own restaurant, a (most-likely) Brooklyn establishment offering Spanish comfort food, you can find him popping up throughout the city where you can sample his authentic Spanish cuisine.

Jonah started his career as a chef when he was 14 and has since worked at restaurants including Gramercy Tavern, Savoy, and Maialino where he became sous-chef. After his three-year stint at Maialino, Jonah travelled to northern Spain and ate his way through the region while taking notes for his own restaurant concept.

Now that the prodigal son has returned, he is hoping to share his love for traditional Spanish cuisine back home in New York with the future opening of his restaurant, Huertas. Huertas will focus on traditional Spanish dishes as offered a casual atmosphere.

Last week at Old Bowery Station, the fairly new venue for pop-ups on the Bowery, Jonah invited guests to join him for pinxtos (mini tapas that are traditionally offered at bars in Spain), cider from northern Spain, and Spanish wines. Rather than cooking up a multi-course sit-down dinner he laid out a spread of his favorite pinxtos that included pulps gallegos (grilled octopus with potatoes), skewers of anchovies, olives, and peppers, tortilla española, and chorizos.

A full plate of pinxtos (mini bar tapas) including chorizo with peppers, shrimp and egg salad, anchovy skewers, mussels in tomato broth, tortilla española, and jamon with pea puree

For his next event he is going back to a more formal dinner format at City Grit on May  9th, 10th, and 11th. The menu will feature modern takes on classic northern Spanish dishes. If you missed the boat last time around, be sure to catch him in May. The dinner is $55 with wine and beer available for purchase. Learn more here.

If you don’t make it to any of his upcoming pop-ups, we recommend to at least keep and your eyes and ears on high alert for any word about the opening of Huertas. Good luck, Jonah!

This Weekend: Pasta Making at Del Posto; Wu Pops Up at Old Bowery Station; Senegalese Cooking Class with Global Kitchen

It’s Friday, oh happy day!  The weekend is nearly upon us.  And in case you are still looking for some activities to fill up your Saturday and Sunday, here are a few food-centric events that may just fit the bill:

Tomorrow Del Posto is hosting one of their exquisite pasta making classes with its Chef de Cuisine, Matt Abdoo.  Aspiring at-home chefs will learn the secrets of crafting the perfect stuffed pasta.  Recipes will include egg-based pasta dough four fillings: ricotta, pumpkin, meat and mushroom. Students will see a demonstration of Del Posto’s famous 100 layer lasagne and create their own agnolotti, mezzaluna, pansoti and cappellacci.  The experience ends with a sit-down Italian lunch with wine pairings.  Some seats are still available here.

Global Kitchen will be hosting a unique Senegalese cooking class Saturday evening from 6:30pm – 10:30pm.  Students will learn about this small West African nation’s history and its traditional cuisine during a hands-on cooking course.   Instructor Nafissa Camara will teach everyone how to make Senegalese dishes including chicken yassa, fish fatayas, and more.  Tickets are $65 and the class is BYOB.

Jonathan Wu is popping up this Sunday evening at the Old Bowery Station.  The Per Se alum’s Wu Pops Up series features “innovative Chinese food inspired by family recipes” including dishes like broadbean curd with chopped kale & salted egg yolk and wheat noodles with pumpkin seed sauce, winter squash & scallion oil.  The nine-course family-style dinner is $55 and BYOB. He will also be involved with year’s LUCKYRICE festival in May, so if you can’t make this Sunday then be sure to look out for him then.
